The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has taken a significant step toward global expansion by appointing Sanjay Jamuar as the first Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of its newly created subsidiary, Delhi Metro International Limited (DMIL). This strategic move aims to strengthen India’s presence in the global metro rail and urban transport consultancy market.
DMIL has been established as a dedicated international arm of DMRC to execute metro projects, provide consultancy services, and manage operations & maintenance (O&M) assignments both within India (outside Delhi) and abroad. The initiative highlights India’s growing capability in world-class metro infrastructure development.
Sanjay Jamuar, a former Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officer, brings extensive experience in railway operations, metro systems, and international transport consultancy. His appointment is expected to accelerate DMRC’s participation in global metro projects across Asia, Europe, and other regions.
According to DMRC, DMIL will act as a knowledge-driven organization offering advisory services to governments, transit authorities, and financial institutions for planning and implementing metro rail systems. The organisation will also support long-term urban transport strategies in developing cities.
DMRC already has a strong international presence, including consultancy work in countries like Bangladesh and participation in metro projects in Indian cities such as Mumbai, Chennai, and Patna. With DMIL, the organisation aims to formalize and expand this global footprint.
This development marks a major milestone in India’s urban transport diplomacy and infrastructure expertise export strategy.
The appointment of Sanjay Jamuar as CEO of DMIL is significant for several reasons. First, it reflects India’s ambition to become a global leader in metro rail development and urban transport consultancy. DMRC, known for its successful Delhi Metro system, is now transforming into a global knowledge exporter through DMIL.
Second, this move opens new economic and diplomatic opportunities. By participating in international metro projects, India can strengthen bilateral cooperation with developing nations seeking modern urban transport systems. This also enhances India’s soft power in infrastructure development.
Third, DMIL will create opportunities for Indian engineers, planners, and consultants to work on global projects, boosting employment and technical expertise. It also helps in generating additional revenue streams beyond domestic metro operations.
From an exam perspective, this development is important for questions related to government PSUs, infrastructure development, urban transport systems, and India’s global economic engagement. It is especially relevant for UPSC, SSC, Railways, Banking, and State PCS examinations.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was established in 1995 as a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of NCT of Delhi. Since then, it has become one of the most successful metro systems globally, known for efficiency, punctuality, and technological innovation.
Delhi Metro operations began in 2002, and over the years, it expanded into multiple phases covering the entire National Capital Region (NCR). Its success model has been widely studied and replicated in other Indian cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad.
DMRC gradually evolved from a metro operator into a consultancy powerhouse, offering expertise to metro projects in India and abroad. It has contributed to metro development in countries like Bangladesh and has participated in advisory and construction roles in multiple Indian metro systems.
The creation of Delhi Metro International Limited (DMIL) is a natural progression of DMRC’s global ambitions. It formalizes its international consultancy and project execution capabilities under a dedicated corporate structure.
