The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) is organising a high-impact platform titled Him-CONNECT during the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2026 in New Delhi from 25 – 27 February 2026. This initiative runs on the sidelines of the prestigious World Sustainable Development Summit, organised by The Energy and Resources Institute—a leading global platform focused on sustainable development dialogues and solutions.
Him-CONNECT is designed as a collaborative ecosystem that brings together scientists, innovators, start-ups, investors, incubators, policymakers and other stakeholders working on climate-smart technologies across the fragile Indian Himalayan Region (IHR). This region, being one of the most climate-sensitive landscapes in the world, plays a crucial role in India’s environment, water security, and ecological stability.
At the core of Him-CONNECT lies its role as a bridge between research and real-world implementation. It provides a dynamic platform for:
Over 24 technologies and pilot solutions, supported under the National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS), are being showcased to demonstrate practical climate solutions for water security, renewable energy, waste management, eco-friendly construction and nature-based livelihoods.
Participating institutions include premier academic and research bodies such as IITs, NITs, CSIR labs, Kumaon University, University of Kashmir and others, emphasising the diverse and multidisciplinary nature of the initiative.
The technologies displayed at Him-CONNECT encompass:
These innovations address the dual need of conservation and livelihood enhancement, keeping sustainability at the centre.
By linking researchers, investors and decision-makers, Him-CONNECT aims to:
This initiative also reflects India’s growing role in global south-south cooperation for climate leadership.
Understanding Him-CONNECT at WSDS 2026 is crucial from an environmental science and governance perspective for exams like UPSC Civil Services (GS Paper-III), State PSCs, SSC CGL, Banking/Others where topics such as sustainable development, climate change policies, innovation ecosystems, and government missions are frequently tested.
Environmental topics increasingly feature in both preliminary and mains exams, especially under Ecology, Climate Change, Government Initiatives, and Science & Technology sections. This initiative showcases how policy and research integrate with grassroots innovation—an important theme for essay and interview stages in UPSC or PSC exams.
Him-CONNECT symbolizes a policy-driven strategy to tackle climate vulnerabilities through technology and collaborative partnerships. It highlights India’s approach to climate challenges—not just through regulations but by scaling home-grown innovations, which are directly relevant to economic growth, disaster resilience, and sustainable livelihoods in fragile regions such as the Himalayas.
Since India’s economic liberalisation and globalisation decades ago, the Himalayan region has faced increasing pressures from climate change, rapid infrastructure expansion, and ecological degradation. The Government of India has recognised the need to balance development with environmental sustainability.
The National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS) was launched to fund research, technology development, and pilot projects that address environmental challenges specific to mountain ecosystems. Him-CONNECT acts as an extension of this mission by providing a platform to showcase innovations and provide policy visibility to research outcomes.
The World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) has been organised annually for over two decades by TERI, becoming a flagship global forum that brings world leaders together to discuss sustainability pathways. By aligning Him-CONNECT with WSDS, the government reinforces its commitment to sustainable policy dialogues and transformational climate action.
Him-CONNECT is a collaborative platform organised by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) during the World Sustainable Development Summit 2026 to promote climate-resilient technologies and sustainable development solutions for the Indian Himalayan Region.
Him-CONNECT is being organised in New Delhi from 25–27 February 2026 on the sidelines of WSDS 2026.
The primary objective is to connect researchers, start-ups, investors, incubators, and policymakers to scale up climate-smart and sustainable technologies for the Himalayan region.
The technologies showcased are supported under the National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS), which focuses on research and sustainable development in the Himalayan ecosystem.
The Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) is crucial for water security, biodiversity, climate regulation, and disaster resilience. It supports millions of livelihoods and is ecologically fragile.
The summit is organised by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), a leading research organisation in the field of sustainable development.
It is relevant under topics such as Climate Change, Sustainable Development, Government Schemes, Environmental Governance, and Science & Technology applications.
Technologies related to water purification, wastewater reuse, eco-friendly infrastructure, renewable energy, and livelihood enhancement such as yak milk processing are being displayed.
It promotes innovation, climate action, sustainable communities, clean water, and economic growth aligned with the UN SDGs framework.
Due to glacier melting, erratic rainfall, landslides, biodiversity loss, and unplanned development, Himalayan ecosystems are highly sensitive to climate variability.
