India is set to introduce the Index of Services Production (ISP) in July 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country’s statistical and economic monitoring framework. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) will release the first trial ISP on 14 July 2026. The new index is designed to measure short-term changes in the output of India’s services sector, much like the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) measures industrial activity.
The services sector has emerged as the backbone of the Indian economy, contributing more than 50 percent of India’s Gross Value Added (GVA) for over a decade. Despite its dominant role, policymakers and economists lacked a reliable high-frequency indicator to track monthly performance of the sector. The ISP aims to fill this gap by providing timely data on service-sector growth.
The Index of Services Production is a monthly macroeconomic indicator that measures changes in the real output of formal service-producing industries compared to a selected base year. It is considered the services-sector counterpart of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP). The base year for the initial ISP series has been fixed at 2024-25.
The ISP will be published every month and initially released with a time lag of approximately 60 days. After the first publication on 14 July 2026, regular releases are expected on the 29th day of each month. The index will provide policymakers, investors, businesses, and researchers with near real-time information about trends in service-sector activity.
The new indicator will cover a broad range of formal service-sector activities. These include:
Health and education services are expected to be incorporated as more comprehensive survey data becomes available.
One of the most innovative aspects of the ISP is its use of multiple modern data sources. The index will draw information from:
The use of GST data reflects India’s growing reliance on digital administrative records for official statistics.
The ISP will be compiled using a Fixed-Weight Laspeyres Volume Index methodology. Sectoral weights will be determined based on each service sector’s contribution to Gross Value Added as reported in the National Accounts Statistics. This methodology is widely used internationally and ensures consistency with other major economic indicators.
To develop a scientifically robust framework, MoSPI constituted a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) in May 2025 under the chairmanship of Debjani Ghosh, Distinguished Fellow at NITI Aayog. The committee consulted experts from academia, industry, and government departments before finalizing the methodology.
The ISP is expected to offer several advantages:
The availability of monthly data will help governments and businesses make faster and more informed decisions.
India’s economy has undergone a structural transformation over the past three decades, with services becoming the dominant contributor to growth and employment. The introduction of ISP reflects the need for modern statistical tools capable of capturing this shift. The new index will complement the IIP and provide a more comprehensive understanding of India’s economic performance.
The launch of the Index of Services Production in July 2026 represents a landmark reform in India’s statistical ecosystem. By providing a monthly measure of service-sector activity, the ISP will strengthen economic policymaking, improve growth forecasting, and align India’s statistical practices with global standards. For government exam aspirants, understanding the ISP is important because it reflects India’s evolving economic structure and highlights ongoing efforts to improve economic governance and data-driven decision-making.
The launch of the Index of Services Production is important because the services sector contributes more than half of India’s Gross Value Added and plays a critical role in employment generation. Yet, until now, India lacked a monthly indicator to track the actual output of the sector. The ISP will bridge this gap and provide policymakers with timely information on economic activity.
Government agencies depend on accurate economic data for planning and policymaking. The ISP will allow authorities to identify economic slowdowns or growth trends much earlier than before. This can help in designing targeted policy interventions, fiscal measures, and development strategies.
For UPSC, State PSC, SSC, Banking, Railways, Defence, and other government examinations, questions related to economic indices, national accounts, GDP measurement, and statistical reforms are frequently asked. The ISP is India’s first dedicated monthly services-sector output index and therefore holds high examination relevance. Aspirants should remember its purpose, base year, methodology, and significance.
The index will improve business cycle analysis and forecasting by providing high-frequency data. Economists, businesses, investors, and researchers will gain deeper insights into the performance of service industries, enabling better investment and planning decisions.
Since the economic liberalization reforms of 1991, India’s services sector has expanded rapidly. Industries such as information technology, telecommunications, finance, tourism, and professional services have become major contributors to national income and exports.
India has long used the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) to measure industrial activity and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Wholesale Price Index (WPI) to track inflation. However, there was no equivalent monthly indicator for services output. This created a gap in understanding short-term economic trends.
Previous attempts to develop a services-sector production index faced difficulties due to limited availability of timely data. The introduction of GST, digitization of government records, and improved administrative databases have now made such an index feasible.
Recognizing the need for a dedicated services-sector indicator, MoSPI established the Technical Advisory Committee in 2025. After consultations and methodological development, the government finalized the framework and scheduled the first release for July 2026.
The Index of Services Production (ISP) is a monthly economic indicator that measures changes in the output of India’s services sector, similar to how the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) measures industrial activity.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) will release the ISP.
India will release the first trial Index of Services Production on 14 July 2026.
The base year for the first ISP series is 2024-25.
It provides a reliable monthly measure of service-sector performance, helping policymakers, businesses, and investors make informed decisions.
The ISP measures the services sector, which contributes more than 50% of India’s Gross Value Added (GVA).
The ISP covers wholesale and retail trade, transport, banking, insurance, telecommunications, hotels, restaurants, real estate, professional services, and entertainment services.
The ISP is compiled using the Fixed-Weight Laspeyres Volume Index methodology.
The IIP measures industrial output, whereas the ISP measures services-sector output.
Questions related to economic indicators, GDP measurement, statistical reforms, and government initiatives are frequently asked in UPSC, PSC, SSC, Banking, Railways, Defence, and other competitive examinations.
A Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) constituted by MoSPI in May 2025 guided the development of the ISP.
GST data, banking records, insurance data, railway statistics, aviation records, and the Annual Survey of Incorporated Services Sector Enterprises (ASISSE) are among the major sources.
The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) is considered the counterpart of the ISP.
GVA measures the value of goods and services produced in an economy after subtracting intermediate consumption and is an important indicator of economic performance.
India lacked a high-frequency indicator to track monthly services-sector output despite the sector being the largest contributor to the economy.
