The Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO) is set to be established at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) in Gandhinagar, marking a significant step forward in India’s artificial intelligence ecosystem. Approved by the Gujarat government under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, this initiative aims to position India at the forefront of AI research and attract global innovation.
On December 30, 2025, the Gujarat government granted in-principle approval for setting up the IAIRO in GIFT City under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The organisation will start its operations from 1st January 2026 as a non-profit entity registered under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013.

A total outlay of ₹300 crore has been earmarked for the first five years of IAIRO’s operations. Funding will be shared equally — 33.33% each by the state government, central government, and private partners. In the initial fiscal year (2025-26), the IPA will contribute ₹25 crore as the anchor private partner.

To ensure high-performance outcomes, IAIRO will use a hybrid computing model, combining on-premise GPU infrastructure with national digital platforms like the IndiaAI Cloud. This will support scalable AI research and innovation.
The establishment of IAIRO aligns with the India AI Mission led by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Gujarat’s own AI Action Plan. An AI Task Force has also been set up to guide the implementation of AI initiatives aimed at improving services like healthcare, education, and agriculture.
