Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Advanced Mother and Child Centre (AMCC) and the Advanced Neurosciences Centre (ANC) at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. He also laid the foundation stone for a 150-bed Critical Care Hospital Block. Together, these healthcare projects involve an investment of around ₹1,200 crore and are expected to significantly strengthen tertiary healthcare services in northern India.
The Advanced Mother and Child Centre has been constructed at a cost of approximately ₹505 crore and is equipped with modern medical infrastructure. The centre features 300 beds, advanced Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), modular operation theatres, and integrated maternal and neonatal healthcare facilities under one roof.
The facility is expected to enhance PGIMER’s ability to manage more than 6,000 high-risk deliveries annually while improving access to specialized healthcare for women and newborns from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and neighbouring regions. Advanced medical equipment worth about ₹147 crore, supported by the Infosys Foundation, has further strengthened the centre’s capabilities.
The newly inaugurated Advanced Neurosciences Centre is another 300-bed state-of-the-art facility that integrates various neurological specialties under one roof. These include neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, neuroanaesthesia, neurocritical care, and neuro-rehabilitation.
The centre aims to improve diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients suffering from neurological disorders such as stroke, epilepsy, brain tumours, spinal disorders, Parkinson’s disease, and traumatic brain injuries. The integrated approach is expected to reduce waiting times and improve patient outcomes.
Along with inaugurating the two major centres, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of a 150-bed Critical Care Hospital Block. The new block will significantly enhance emergency response capacity, intensive care services, and disaster preparedness at PGIMER.
This facility will complement existing healthcare services by providing dedicated infrastructure for critically ill patients requiring advanced monitoring and life-support systems.
The inauguration reflects the Government of India’s continued emphasis on strengthening public healthcare infrastructure under the vision of accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare. PGIMER Chandigarh serves millions of patients every year from several northern states and functions as one of India’s premier medical education, research, and referral institutions.
The addition of these advanced centres will reduce pressure on existing hospital facilities, improve patient care, promote medical research, and provide better training opportunities for healthcare professionals. The projects also contribute towards India’s long-term objective of modernising tertiary healthcare institutions and improving health outcomes across the country.
